The Devil in Pew Number 7 by Rebecca Nichols Alonzo
The Devil in Pew Number Seven by Rebecca Nichols Alonzo is the true story of a pastorís family who is terrorized by a member of their congregation for many years. The author is the daughter of the pastor and these event take place for her between the ages of around 4-8 years old. The multiple bombings of their house and drive by shootings are well documented in public records and news accounts as well as in her parentsí personal journals (in case you are wondering about the accuracy of the memory of a child that young). Throughout many horrible and frightening things this church member and neighbor does in an attempt to drive the pastor away from the church, the pastor remains firm and convinced that he is not to leave nor retaliate. The children are tremendously traumatized. When the author is 8 years old her mother is murdered in front of her and her father shot. The stress eventually destroys the fatherís mental and physical health and he dies when the author is 14. Where the parents right to stay on at the church in this situation? Can this be redeemed in this life? Was the final outcome worth the pain and emotional trauma?
